When is surgery necessary?

Polyps of the anal canal and lower rectum can be surgically removed. Depending on the size and location of the polyps, the procedure may be performed under local or general anaesthesia. All removed polyps are sent for histological examination (tissue analysis). Removal of adenomatous (precancerous) polyps helps prevent colorectal cancer.

Surgery is necessary if:

  • the polyps cannot be removed endoscopically;
  • he polyp is causing symptoms or discomfort.
