An orthopaedist is a doctor who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. Patients are referred to an orthopaedist, for example, in cases of joint pain, sports injuries, joint degeneration, or mobility problems.

When should you visit an orthopaedist?

• You experience persistent pain in the knee, hip, or shoulder joint
• The joint hurts during movement or physical activity
• You have been injured during movement or sports
• You feel that joint movement is limited or painful
• There is deformity or instability in the arm or leg
• Duration: 30 minutes

Joint aspiration (arthrocentesis) is a procedure in which a doctor inserts a sterile needle into the joint cavity to remove synovial fluid for testing or to reduce joint swelling and pressure. If necessary, medication may be injected into the joint during the procedure, such as an anti-inflammatory drug or a substance that supports joint mobility. The procedure is used for various joint diseases and complaints.

When is joint aspiration needed?

The procedure may be necessary if there is:

• joint swelling and pain;
• inflammatory joint diseases;
• post-traumatic conditions;
• osteoarthritis or gout;
• accumulation of joint fluid.

The procedure is performed under sterile conditions, and ultrasound guidance may be used for more precise needle placement if needed. It usually takes 5–15 minutes, and the patient can go home after the appointment.

If severe pain, significant swelling, redness, or fever occurs after the procedure, medical attention should be sought.

Important information:

• after an injection or aspiration, the joint may be temporarily sensitive;
• relief may last from weeks to several months;
• it is recommended to rest the joint for 24–48 hours after the procedure and avoid heavy physical exertion;
• rare side effects may include temporary pain, tenderness, or bruising;
• if severe pain, significant swelling, redness, or fever occurs after the procedure, a doctor should be consulted.
