Cardiology

Cardiology is the medical specialty focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heart and cardiovascular diseases. This field evaluates heart function, circulatory health, and cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and lifestyle habits. Cardiology covers both the management of chronic heart conditions and the early detection of cardiovascular disease.

When Should You See a Cardiologist?

  • You experience pain, pressure, or discomfort in the chest that may radiate to the arms, jaw, or back.
  • You experience palpitations, an irregular pulse, or heart rhythm disturbances.
  • You experience shortness of breath, breathlessness, or fatigue, even during light physical activity or at rest.
  • You have persistently high blood pressure or frequently fluctuating blood pressure.
  • You experience recurring episodes of dizziness or weakness.
  • There is a family history of heart disease, particularly early heart attacks or vascular disease.

Recommendation: If you experience severe symptoms such as intense chest pain, pressure or tightness in the chest, sudden shortness of breath, fainting, severe dizziness, or a rapid irregular heartbeat, seek immediate medical attention at the Emergency Department.

If symptoms are mild to moderate, such as mild chest discomfort, moderate shortness of breath during physical activity, occasional palpitations, or dizziness, you may schedule a cardiology consultation.

Our cardiologists provide recommendations and assessments only after a thorough examination of the heart and evaluation of cardiac function. Therefore, a comprehensive overview requires both diagnostic tests and blood analyses.

What does a heart health check-up include?

The health check-up takes place in two parts so that blood test results are available during the nurse and doctor visits.

At least 2 working days before the appointment:

  • Blood tests – analyses that provide information about indicators affecting heart health: complete blood count, glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDL, ALT, AST, sodium, potassium, calcium, and TSH.
  • Blood samples can be taken at all Synlab service points.

Cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography)

Echocardiography is an ultrasound examination of the heart that uses sound waves to create real-time images of its structure and function. It is a quick, painless, and safe procedure that helps diagnose conditions affecting the heart valves, heart muscle, and overall cardiac function.

Why might you need an echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram may be recommended to:

  • determine the cause of shortness of breath, fatigue, or heart palpitations;
  • assess your heart health and help detect potential problems at an early stage;
  • identify signs of heart failure, which can cause swelling of the legs, abdomen, or face;
  • evaluate the condition of your heart valves and heart muscle;
  • investigate the cause of chest pain or a feeling of pressure in the chest.

What should you know about an echocardiogram?

  • No special preparation is required.
  • You can eat and drink as usual before the examination.

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring

24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) is a test that measures your blood pressure over a 24-hour period to provide an accurate picture of how it changes throughout the day and night, as well as the workload on your heart. The test is painless, does not interfere with your normal daily activities, and helps detect hidden (masked) hypertension or abnormal blood pressure patterns.

When should you consider a 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) test?

  • You have noticed elevated blood pressure or symptoms of high blood pressure, such as headaches or dizziness.
  • You would like to obtain an accurate overview of your blood pressure throughout the day and night.
  • You experience heart palpitations, fatigue, or an irregular heartbeat that may be associated with changes in blood pressure.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

An electrocardiogram (ECG) measures the electrical activity of the heart to assess its rhythm and overall function. It is often the first diagnostic test used to evaluate heart conditions and determine whether further investigations are needed.

When should you have an ECG?

  • You have noticed heart palpitations, an irregular heartbeat, or sudden heart rhythm disturbances.
  • You would like to check your heart health or monitor an existing heart condition.
  • You experience chest pain, a feeling of pressure in the chest, or shortness of breath.
  • There is a suspicion of an underlying heart condition or a heart rhythm disorder that may not be detectable at rest.
  • You have noticed persistent fatigue or weakness that may be related to your heart function.
